The V sign is a hand gesture where the index and middle finger are raised and parted and the other fingers are drained together. This gesture is nowadays a symbol. In history it has had various meanings, depending on the cultural context and how it is has been presented.

When displayed with the palm inward towards the signer, it has long been an offensive gesture in some nations. In the 1940s, during the World War II it was used in a campaign by the Western Allies, with then Great Britains Prime Minister Winston Churchill as its front figure, and was called THE VICTORY HAND  as a “V for Victory” sign proved quite effective. In the 1960s during the Vietnam war, the “V sign” was widely adopted by the counterculture as a symbol of peace. churchill_v_sign_hu_55521

As an example of the V sign (palm inward) as an insult, on November 1, 1990, The Sun Magazine ran an article on its front page with the headline “Up Yours, Delors” next to a large hand making a V sign protruding from a Union Jack cuff.

440px-steve_mcqueenThe actor Steve McQueen gives the sign in the closing scene of the 1971 motorsport movie, Le Mans and also in his mugshot taken after he was arrested for drunk driving. The V gesture was also flashed by the character Spike, Played by James Marsters in ”Hush” , a season 4 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Ringo Starr from the Beatles, has been using  the ‘V’ sign extensively throughout his career while quoting the phrase “Peace and Love”. Many artists has followed his lead and kept the message flowing. rihanna_loud_tour_minneapolis_6_crop

In the postmodern world it has also become adopted as a gesture of peace used in photographs, especially in Japan.  Because of its popularity in Japan, it exists as an Emoji. ✌.

For me the V gesture connotes Peace and Love and Victory. A victory for all mankind in any outcome of any battle taken on by anyone anywhere. If the aftermath of any strive, battle och revolt is a world brighter, more free and more peaceful, then that is a victory for all.

So today. May peace, love, openess, transparency and understanding be what we strive to focus upon, work for and be reminded on this day and onwards. No matter what the outcome is of this challenging day, November 8 2016. Yes, it has been a nasty discourse in the world lately. Not only due to the American election, but in societies all over.

✌🏻️I see this as something new is emerging; a new paradigm. Not tomorrow but in a near future. And in the upcoming days, weeks and years, it comes down to our individual personal choices – what do we want our lives to be about? The hunt for adorement/validation/confirmation from others in order to be someone or actually take your place within yourself? What we all need is to start validating ourselves within. To realize we are one family and we all need each others support. Then we might put up our fingers once again, this time for victory. That Peace, Love and dialogue was chosen by more than a few.

✌🏻Who ever reads this: Stop. Feeling like you are crap or that YOU n e e d  things from the world.
You matter. So do I. We all matter. The world needs US. Big time.
✌🏻Lets support the world and feed it with hugs, smiles, love, stringency, dialogue and reflection.
V for peace. Thats my religion.
Peace. Within and without. ✌🏻

V as in Victory and Peace,

Ulrica
